The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox
10/23/25

An American exchange student’s semester in Perugia becomes a global spectacle when she’s wrongfully imprisoned for her roommate’s murder. The series traces Amanda Knox’s years-long fight to clear her name, and interrogates how police theories, prosecutorial narratives, and a voracious media ecosystem hardened public opinion against her. Created by K.J. Steinberg and starring Grace Van Patten, the show draws from Knox’s memoir Waiting to Be Heard (2013). Knox serves as an executive producer alongside Monica Lewinsky, reclaiming authorship over a story long told by others.
Why this story matters:
Amanda Knox was ultimately exonerated by Italy’s highest court in 2015, yet the damage of years under the “guilt by accusation” spotlight lingers. The show surfaces core chokehold elements AJP fights every day: pre-trial detention, media manipulation, and a level of prosecutorial misconduct that would more adequately be described as prosecutorial theater.
Why this telling matters:
Knox isn’t just portrayed - she’s producing. By helping shape the narrative on-screen, she challenges the sensationalism that once defined her, modeling what it looks like when the harmed take back the mic. Lewinsky’s participation further underlines the series’ critique of public shaming and trial-by-headline - how reputations can be weaponized long before the facts are sorted.
Why it belongs on AJP’s Resource list:
Knox does not fit many people’s stereotype of who gets chewed up by the system. That’s exactly the point. The Chokehold doesn’t discriminate. When presumption replaces proof, when officials and media build momentum around a tidy narrative, anyone - regardless of background - can be swept into coercive tactics, pretrial restraints, reputational ruin, and years stolen. This series is a vivid case study in why AJP is mobilizing communities to End the Chokehold and restore due process for all.
