Justice for Scarlett
The Scarlett family is recovering from a 12-point chokehold of injustice perpetrated by the system meant to protect them.
Justice for Scarlett
Mervin Anthony Scarlett, a devoted father who is loved by many for his kindness and exceptional culinary skills, found himself thrust into a nightmare when his infant son was diagnosed with a skull fracture. What began as a routine medical check-up escalated into a wrongful arrest by the Vernon Police, tearing Scarlett away from his family and launching him into a horrifying legal battle. Scarlett's story epitomizes the injustices faced by countless individuals caught in the unforgiving grip of a flawed system, highlighting the urgent need for transformation.
Date of Initial Wrongful Incident:
- Part 1: November 11, 2021 (Fracture discovered in Scarlet’s 4-month-old son’s head)
- Part 2: May 31, 2022 (Scarlet and his fiance are wrongfully arrested by Vernon Police)
Timeline:
November 11, 2021: Incident: Mervin Scarlett and his fiancé presented their 4-month-old son for a pre-scheduled medical checkup. The parents repeated their shared concerns over the abnormal size of their son’s head; something the couple has voiced to medical staff since his birth, yet their concerns went unaddressed. Finally, doctors decided to run tests after learning the size of the 4-month-old son’s head was equivalent to that of a 27-month-old infant. Scarlett’s son was diagnosed with a skull fracture and he and his fiancé were immediately suspected of child abuse and separated from their children. The child had no secondary injuries indicating abuse. Both children were placed in foster care where they currently remain.
May 31, 2022: Incident: Mervin Scarlett and fiancé are arrested by Vernon Police. The arrest warrant cites the couple’s admitted practice of baby-stretching - newborn exercises used to improve flexibility.
June 9, 2022: Incident: Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) withdraws Scarlett's "F" endorsement to his operator’s license. This endorsement permits individuals to operate taxi, livery, or bus services. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles determined Scarlett’s “continued possession of an “F” endorsement is an imminent threat to public safety.
March 2023: Incident: Scarlett’s fiancé accepts a coerced plea bargain of 2 years probation.

End the Chokehold
What is the Chokehold? Officials use oppressive tactics to coerce accused individuals into forced or false confessions, plea bargains, and other harms. We define those activities as Chokeholds
